Pediatric Eye Care

Why Regular Pediatric Eye Exams Are So Important

At Eyecare Kingston, we understand how important vision is to your child’s learning, development, and everyday confidence. Our pediatric eye exams are designed to assess more than just eyesight, helping detect vision and eye health concerns early while creating a comfortable experience for children of all ages.

Using advanced diagnostic technology, including Optomap ultra-widefield retinal imaging, we are able to evaluate your child’s eye health in greater detail — often without the need for pupil dilation. From infants to teens, each exam is tailored to your child’s age, visual development, and individual needs.

We also provide myopia management options for children experiencing progressive nearsightedness, including MiYOSMART lenses designed to help slow myopia progression while supporting clear, comfortable vision.

If glasses are needed, our experienced team will help your child find comfortable, durable frames and lens solutions suited to school, sports, and everyday life.

Our goal is to provide knowledgeable, personalized pediatric eye care that supports long-term vision and healthy visual development at every stage.

When Should Your Child Have Their Eye Exam?

Ensuring your child's vision stays healthy is so important, regular eye exams are a must! The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends the following guidelines for pediatric eye exams:

  • Infants and Toddlers (Birth to 24 months): It's important to have your baby's first eye exam between 6 and 9 months to ensure proper development.
  • Preschool Children (2 to 5 years): Even at this young age, a check-up is important to catch any early vision concerns. We recommend an exam between 2 and 5 years old.
  • School-Aged Children (6 to 19 years): Kids should have their eyes examined annually to make sure they're seeing clearly and ready to learn, play, and grow!

Just like we prioritize physical health, eye health is crucial for every aspect of your child's growth. Detecting vision problems early can prevent struggles in school, sports, and daily activities - setting them up for success.
