Caring for Your New Glasses

Helpful Tips

Adjusting to Your New Glasses

Your eyes may need time to adjust to your new glasses. For many the adjustment period is only a couple days, but for some, it can take up to 2 weeks.
Some of the symptoms you may experience include:

  1. Headaches
  2. Dizziness
  3. Nausea
  4. Blurry Vision
  5. Eye Strain

If you experience any of these symptoms, please be patient and continue wearing your new glasses. Your vision will most likely adjust, and the symptoms should go away after a few days. The more you wear your new glasses, the easier the transition will be.

If you have any concerns or are having difficulties adapting, please contact our office at 613-507-0707.

We recommend you have your glasses adjusted once or twice a year. Please schedule a complimentary appointment with one of our opticians to maintain correct shape and fit.

Caring for Your New Glasses

  1. Clean the lenses and frame - regularly clean with lukewarm water and a drop of mild liquid soap.
  2. Use a cleaning cloth – dry the lenses with a soft, clean microfiber lens cloth, often provided by your optician.
  3. Avoid harmful products - household detergents and products such as hairspray can damage lenses and coatings.
  4. Use 2 hands to put on and take off your glasses - to avoid stretching out your frames.
  5. Use a hard case - keep your glasses in a hard case when you aren’t using them to avoid scratches.
  6. Hold your glasses by the bridge – hold your glasses by the bridge of the frame when you clean them.
  7. Don’t use household glass cleaners to clean glasses - products such as Windex have ingredients that may damage the lenses and break down the coatings.
  8. Don't wipe your lenses with tissues, paper towels or paper napkins - these often contain wood fibers that can permanently damage the lens surface.
  9. Don't wipe your lenses with a towel that has been washed with fabric softener - this can leave a misty film on your lenses.
  10. Don't spit on your lenses - saliva may contain oil or other damaging substances.
  11. Don't leave your glasses on any hot or cold surfaces – extreme heat or cold can damage the lens coating and may change the frame shape.
  12. Don't put your glasses down on the curved side of the lenses - this can damage the coating and cause scratches.
  13. Don't put your glasses on your head - this can misalign the frame.
