Dr. Michael Lewis - Optometrist
Dr. Lewis was born in Montreal but spent most of his early years in Owen Sound, Ontario. He was introduced to vision health at a very young age by his parents, who were both in the practice of ophthalmology. As a teenager he had the opportunity to work alongside his parents in the ophthalmology clinic, as an ophthalmic assistant & visual field technician.
His University education began at the University of Western Ontario where he graduated with an honours bachelor of science degree in genetics, followed by a masters degree in molecular biology. He stayed at Western after graduation where he managed and performed research in a genetic/endocrinology lab dedicated to the study of breast cancer. During this time he enjoyed assisting in teaching undergraduate genetics courses and had the opportunity to publish several journal articles.
He returned to his studies at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and graduated on the dean’s honour list class of 2008. He began his optometry career in Victoria, BC where he was an associate for 2 years before returning to Ontario, to be closer to family.
Dr. Lewis has been practicing full scope optometry in Kingston since January 2010 and is happy to call Kingston his home. He lives in Kingston's west end with his wife and two children. He enjoys playing soccer and golf when he’s not spending time with his family.
Dr. Andrew Lewis - Optometrist
Dr. Andrew Lewis was born in Ontario but spent most of his life living in Victoria BC. His father, an ophthalmologist who practiced in Owen Sound, introduced him to vision health at a very young age. He had the opportunity to work alongside both his parents in the ophthalmology clinic, as an ophthalmic assistant.
His University education began at the University of Victoria where he graduated with honours degrees in both neural psychology and microbiology.
He returned to his studies in Oregon earning his O.D. from the Pacific College of Optometry. He spent time training at an ophthalmology medical centre in rural Alaska, a veteran’s hospital in Pennsylvania, a contact lens clinic in Minnesota and an ophthalmology surgery centre in Idaho. His professional interests include ocular disease management, primary care optometry, contact lenses and surgery co-management.
Dr. Lewis could not be more excited about returning to Ontario to be closer to his family. When not working he enjoys playing hockey, soccer and practically anything outdoors. Dr. Lewis is honoured to be joining the impressive team at Eyecare Kingston. He looks forward to meeting you, and providing unique solutions to meet your specific visual needs.
Deborah - Administrative / Optometric Manager
Deborah was born and raised in Oakville, Ontario. She began her University studies at the University of Western Ontario where she graduated with a bachelor of arts in economics.
After graduation she spent 6 years working as a project control officer for CGI and the Toronto Stock Exchange. She then moved to beautiful Victoria, BC to further her education at the University of Victoria. While there she completed a B.Sc. in biology, followed by marine biology studies at Bamfield Marine Science Center.
She began her marine biology career in 2005 at the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, BC. While working there she had the opportunity to perform a variety of functions, including field work, data management, web and database programming, and assiting with journal articles for the Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS), Canadian Coast Guard, and Canadian Wildlife Service.
In 2010, she moved back to Ontario and now calls Kingston her home. She currently manages two careers, general manager with Eyecare Kingston and independent contractor with IOS, while ensuring she still makes time for her family.
Richard - Licensed Optician
A second generation optician, Richard's education in opticianry began at a young age in his home town of Cornwall, ON as apprentice in his father's optical lab. He quickly realized his love for the profession and became a certified optician, after graduating in 1984 with honours from Georgian College.
In 1987, he moved to Espanola, ON and opened his own optical company, called RLD Opticians. By consistently offering value, selection and excellent customer service, Richard created a very successful business and operated it for 22 years.
Fortunately for us, Richard and his wife Sheila choose a new path and moved to Kingston, ON. Dr. Michael Lewis had the pleasure of meeting and working with Richard prior to opening Eyecare Kingston. Richard not only brings a wealth of optical knowledge to our team, but he provides an exceptional level of customer service. He has a natural skill for selecting frames and helping our patients find the right option to suit their style, needs and budget. We are confident that our patients will notice and appreciate the difference he'll provide in overall service and satisfaction.
Jessica - Licensed Optician
Jessica was born and raised in Prince Edward County. She began her studies at the University of Waterloo where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating university, she attended Georgian College in Barrie where she found her calling studying Opticianry.
Jessica was first introduced to the Optical industry through her uncle and cousin, who own a store in Sudbury, Ontario. From the family business she learned how to provide exceptional customer service.
She has spent the last eighteen years gaining experience at a variety of different optical stores. After school, Jessica worked for a franchise in Ottawa for a few years, but then decided to travel and see more of Canada. Jessica has gained experience working as an Optician for an independent optical in Sidney, British Columbia, as well as a corporation in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Jessica moved back to Ontario in 2010 to be closer to family.
Julie - Administrative / Optometric Assistant
Julie was born and raised in Kingston, Ontario. She attended Queen’s University and majored in psychology while earning her Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) degree. During that time, Julie also worked as a research assistant in developmental psychology before going on to earn her Bachelor of Education degree. Immediately after graduating, she travelled to Mexico where she taught Grade 3 in a private English school in Monterrey. Following that, Julie taught Junior Kindergarten and Special Education in Buckingham, Quebec, and Grade 2/3 at a private boarding school in Belleville, Ontario.
Julie then returned to Kingston, married her high school sweetheart, and started a family. While her children were young, she worked as a preschool teacher for a popular tutoring company, and then started her own business operating an academic-based preschool where she focused on giving children a healthy head start in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics.
Once her children were old enough, Julie re-examined her career goals and decided that she was ready for a change. She determined that medical office administration would be an excellent fit. Soon after, she was hired by a long-standing physiotherapy clinic in downtown Kingston. While working there, Julie endeavored to earn her Medical Office Administration diploma, and was awarded a certificate in Medical Terminology shortly before joining us at Eyecare Kingston.
Julie is very pleased to be a member of Eyecare Kingston. She welcomes the new opportunities for professional growth, and enjoys working cooperatively with our team members to provide customers with the highest standard of customer service and vision care available.
Lourdes - Administrative / Optometric Assistant
Lourdes migrated to Canada in 1987 bringing with her the degree of Bachelor in Applied Economics from Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Shortly after settling in Toronto, she took the Receptionist job at Hudson's Bay Company, formerly Simpsons and was promoted to management position in one of its licensed departments.
Lourdes' caring personality prompted her to change her career. She attended the Nursing Program at George Brown College and graduated with Honors. After obtaining her license as Registered Practical Nurse, she began working at Runnymede Healthcare Center while raising her family. Due to the responsibilities of raising a newborn daughter, Lourdes decided to leave nursing and seek employment in an office setting.
She has spent her 16 years in an optical industry by assisting patients in their frame selections as well as teaching insertion, care and maintenance of contact lenses. Her nursing background helped her understand the importance of addressing the different ocular health issues and the accountability in the health care industry.
Lourdes and her family moved to Kingston in 2016 and embraced the new chapter of her life. In the course of establishing herself in Kingston, Lourdes is now a proud team member of Eyecare Kingston and ready to share her passion.
During her free time, Lourdes finds herself volunteering in Partners In Mission Food Bank, Providence Care, Chartwell Conservatory, Arbour Heights and her local church. She believes in giving back to the community and making a difference in someone else's life.
Karla - Administrative / Optometric Assistant
Karla grew up on the prairies in Alberta. As a teen, her family moved to Ontario where she ended up attending St. Lawrence College, taking a General Arts and Science program. While in Kingston, Karla met and married a man who was in the Navy. The two of them moved out to the base in Esquimalt BC where Karla attended and graduated from the Hotel and Restaurant Management course at Camosun College in Victoria BC.
Afterwards, Karla worked for a large harbour-front hotel as a Front Desk Attendant and as an Event Co-ordinator booking and planning corporate functions and weddings. Soon after she took a position as Night Auditor, balancing the books. Eventually, her husband was transferred to Halifax NS, and Karla decided to take some time off to be home with their young children.
Upon re-entering the workforce, Karla was employed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School in Amherstview, ON in order to be close to her children. As they grew to be more independent, she felt the urge to return to working in an office setting. Now, she is a proud member of the staff here at Eyecare Kingston. Karla is enjoying the challenges of our busy office, and looks forward to her opportunities to work with the wonderful staff and clients here.
